Michael Costello is an American Couture Fashion Designer and the first American rom (Gypsy) fashion designer. He was on Season 8 of Project Runway and finished in fourth place. He returned to Project Runway for their All-Star season and was the first finalist and was able to show his collection at the 2010 Mercedez-Benz Fashion week. One of the interesting facts about Costello is that he never went to school to learn his craft, he is self-taught. Costello made his very first couture collection with lipstick productions of Los Angeles at age fourteen. This earned him reviews and listings in magazines such as Vogue (the most famous of them all) and Glue Magazine. Independent Designers, Who are They?

Posted by on Dec 11, 2013 in designer, internship, Runway | Comments Off on Independent Designers, Who are They?

What is the difference between a designer like Chanel and an Independent Designer like Lobo Mau?  The most noticeable difference is that independent designers handle every aspect of creating a garment, from the concept to the store.  Designers like Chanel have expanded into Houses and have teams for production, design, selling, promoting, etc. Independent designers spend most of their time in their design studios.  Some designers have studios in their homes and others drive to their studio spaces.  In their design studios they will design, cut fabric and sew the garments.  The studio is literally where the magic happens. Independent designers are responsible for all of their supplies including fabric purchases.  They can buy their fabric on the roll at numerous fabric stores.  Mood, made popular by project runway, is an example of a place that designers can go to find...

Revealing the product of its first collaborations with fashion icon Inès de la Fressange and Nigo Takizawa, Uniqlo is reviving the fashion part of spring. Inès de la Fressange and Nigo met last May where the two collaborated on the collection, giving it a vintage French feel. “I wanted to make the clothes in her wardrobe,” Takizawa explained, also stating that while the two were at de la Fressange’s Parisian home, she toke pieces out of her closet for this inspiration. “It’s amazing the ‘kawaii’ (Japanese word for “cute”) taste that she brings,” he added. Uniqlo design director Naoki Takizawa was inspired to interact with de la Fressange when he spotted a photo of the fashion icon and former model wearing Uniqlo designs. Inès de la Fressange mentioned, “Everything can be mixed together. All kinds of women from all...

Dom Streaver is the first Philadelphian to win Project Runway in eight years and is the only African American to win.  Dom worked at the Philadelphia Zoo in high school and college where she attended Moore College of Art and Design, where she was an expert in textiles. At first, she wanted to be a marine biologist, but something about fashion had a hold on her.  Dom worked in animal care at the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine, but she also set up a website and sold some items. Now after winning Project Runway, she has big plans.  She won $150,000 in cash to launch her collection and a 2014 Lexus IS 350.  At a New York Fashion Week presentation, Dom showed her garments made from prints drawn by hand, scanned into a computer, and Photoshop.  She’s designing a dress...
