Fashion Merchandising

Earn a career-focused degree in fashion, tailored to fit you. The Fashion Merchandising program at Immaculata University offers students both a creative and analytical curriculum that contains industry-driven courses that explore the relationships between design, merchandising, and marketing.

Our faculty are expert fashion professionals who bring the real world into the classroom. You will learn all the major components of the business of fashion—from design concepts to product development to merchandising—enabling you to understand the complete process, from design to consumer.

Fashion field trip

Fashion makes an important contribution to society by creating jobs and products that satisfy fundamental human needs.  Fashion professionals can also contribute to society by promoting environmental sustainability and helping to improve manufacturers’ working conditions.  Our students participate in service learning projects and are challenged to examine the impact of fashion through the lens of people, planet and profit.

Career Preparation

Immaculata takes your professional development seriously. During each year of your studies, you’ll gain exposure to the fashion industry and participate in it in order to be ready for your career.

First Year Experience: The Fashion program’s comprehensive speaker series will give you insight into various career paths and help you make connections with professionals in the industry.

Sophomore Year Review: You will present your career goals, both short- and long-term, to your advisor. He or she will work with you to determine career pathways based on your personal interests, goals and unique set of strengths.

Junior Field Experiences: You will complete two field experiences, which will be aligned with your chosen career path to help you gain hands-on experience. Senior Industry Project: You will be assigned a real-world project with an emerging brand. You will have the opportunity to:

  • Analyze and research trends related to your company
  • Effectively present and communicate the business strategy
  • Assess the company’s target market, market position and brand strategy
  • Create solutions to the company’s specific challenges and enhance brand strategy
  • Develop leadership and managerial skills

Curriculum

The courses in the program are carefully sequenced and updated as the industry changes. The program provides a dynamic, customizable curriculum with eight minors that help you specialize in an area specific to your career path.

  • Buying: You’ll learn how to develop a merchandise assortment plan that includes planning sales, stock levels, and inventory turn.
  • Visual Merchandising:  You will plan, design and install various displays and styling concepts understanding key design elements and principles, retail and marketing strategy and brand image within the context of relevant business applications.
  • Product Development:  You will learn about garment construction and production techniques, and you will be able manage the product development process with the supply chain.
  • Graphic Design for Fashion:  You will produce clear and cohesive solutions to design problems in a variety of media.
  • Entrepreneurship:  You will be able to develop a business plan for a sustainable fashion-related entrepreneurial venture.
  • Marketing:  You will learn how to develop a marketing plan considering consumer motivation and behavior as it relates to various brands.
  • Communication: You will present your ideas (writing, visual, virtual) in a comprehensive way that will motivate your audience to action.
  • Public Relations & Journalism: You will be able to research, plan, and implement a PR campaign that is clear, concise and engaging with a working knowledge of a variety of PR tactics in written, audio, video, web and social media.

Study Tours

Accompanied by IU faculty, you’ll visit major fashion and design centers, such as New York City and Paris. On these annual tours, you’ll meet with industry professionals, go behind-the-scenes at companies, and become immersed in art, architecture, fashion and pop culture.

New York City Fashion Study Tour

As part of the First Year Experience, you’ll spend two days in the Big Apple and gain insight into the careers you can pursue. And during your spring break, experience the City of Lights. Tour the city with a professor of fashion history, visit museums, and attend special appointments related to the industry.
